Keep, Store, Shred: Can I throw this out?
With so many documents, statements, and forms getting put in front of us, it’s hard to keep track of managing them long term. Every piece of paper has a different schedule of how long you need to keep it, where you need to keep it, who you should share it with, and when you can finally say goodbye to it. It’s impossible to keep straight.
As I filed this year’s tax return away, I noticed my file drawer was getting a little full, or maybe a lot full. Usually I just make it fit, but this year was tough, looks like I’ve been filing taxes longer than I realized! This was the year I hit my document retention limit.
I decided it would be a good idea to have a quick reference guide in this file drawer, right up front, maybe laminated, to answer all of my document retention questions as they come to me. I also decided it might nice to share.
